Why Our Approach Is Different: Therapy That Continues Between Sessions

You are not a template — so why should your support be?

When you have been struggling for a long time, sitting down for an hour and talking about what has happened can be helpful.

But sometimes, talking is only the beginning.

At Linda CJ Turner, we take a different approach.

Rather than placing every client into the same programme and expecting them to work through a standard set of sessions, we create bespoke programmes around the individual.

Because your experiences are personal.

Your history is different.

Your relationships are different.

Your triggers, patterns, challenges and goals are different.

And your therapeutic support should reflect that.

Your programme is created around you

Our programmes are designed to provide structure while remaining individual to the person we are working with.

We begin by understanding what you are experiencing, what you have been through, what you want to change and where you feel you need the greatest support.

From there, we can develop a programme that focuses on the areas most relevant to you.

This might include areas such as:

  • understanding trauma responses;
  • emotional regulation;
  • rebuilding confidence;
  • recognising unhealthy relationship patterns;
  • understanding trauma bonding;
  • developing boundaries;
  • managing emotional triggers;
  • reconnecting with yourself;
  • understanding the relationship between thoughts, emotions and the nervous system;
  • developing practical coping strategies;
  • rebuilding trust in your own decisions; or
  • moving forward after emotionally difficult experiences.

The emphasis is not simply on what happened to you, but also on understanding what you need now.

Your workbook is part of the process

One of the things that makes our programmes different is the use of bespoke workbooks.

These are not simply generic worksheets downloaded from the internet.

Where appropriate, we create written material specifically to complement the work being undertaken during your programme.

Your workbook can give you somewhere to:

Reflect.

Understand.

Write.

Notice patterns.

Practise new strategies.

Record progress.

And perhaps most importantly, continue the work between sessions.

This means your session does not necessarily end when the video call ends.

You have something practical to return to afterwards.

The work continues between sessions

We believe that the time between sessions can be valuable.

For this reason, appropriate clients may receive recordings, exercises and personalised resources to use between appointments.

These may help you revisit concepts discussed during your session, practise particular techniques or give yourself time to reflect when you are in your own environment.

Instead of trying to remember everything discussed during a session, you may have resources that allow you to return to the material at a time that feels appropriate.

This can help create continuity between one appointment and the next.

We don’t believe in a “one size fits all” approach

Two people can experience what appears to be a similar situation and be affected in completely different ways.

One person may need to understand why they constantly feel on alert.

Another may be struggling with boundaries.

Someone else may have lost confidence in their own judgement after years of being told that their feelings or perceptions were wrong.

Another person may simply be trying to understand why they no longer recognise themselves.

Their programmes should not necessarily look the same.

That is why we don’t believe that meaningful therapeutic support should always begin with:

Session 1. Session 2. Session 3. Session 4.

Instead, the structure should have a purpose.

The programme should have a direction.

And the individual should remain at the centre of the work.

From understanding to practical change

Understanding your experiences can be incredibly important.

But understanding alone does not always make it easier to respond differently.

That is why our programmes combine conversation, education, reflection and practical exercises where appropriate.

We may explore what is happening in your nervous system, how emotional responses develop, how certain relationship patterns affect you and what happens when your body perceives threat.

Then we can move towards practical strategies that may help you recognise and manage those responses.

The aim is to help you develop greater understanding and awareness that you can take beyond the therapy session.

You have something to work with after the appointment

One of the most common experiences people have with traditional appointments is leaving the room and thinking:

“I wish I could remember everything we talked about.”

Our use of personalised workbooks and recordings is intended to help address that gap.

You can revisit relevant material.

You can reflect on questions when you have time.

You can practise between appointments.

You can make notes about what you notice.

And you can bring those observations back into the next session.

That creates a continuing process rather than a series of disconnected conversations.

Your progress matters

Our programmes can also include opportunities to review how you are progressing.

This is not about giving you a score or telling you how you “should” feel.

It is about creating opportunities to stop and ask:

What has changed?

What am I understanding now that I didn’t understand before?

What feels different?

What am I finding difficult?

What still needs attention?

What do I want to work on next?

Sometimes progress is obvious.

Sometimes it is subtle.

Sometimes it is simply noticing something that you previously couldn’t see.

Those changes can be worth recognising.

Personalised does not mean unlimited

Creating a bespoke programme does not mean providing unlimited access or being available around the clock.

Our relationship remains professional, structured and boundaried.

Your programme will set out what is included, how sessions are arranged and what supporting materials are provided.

The purpose of personalisation is to make the work relevant to you, not to remove professional boundaries.

We are not trying to replace your doctor or specialist care

Our approach is designed to provide trauma-informed therapeutic and educational support.

It does not replace medical care, psychiatric treatment, diagnosis or emergency mental-health services.

Where someone requires care outside the scope of our services, we may recommend that they seek support from an appropriately qualified healthcare or mental-health professional.

Knowing when additional specialist support is appropriate is part of responsible therapeutic practice.

So, what makes us different?

For us, it comes down to one simple principle:

You are an individual, not a programme number.

We don’t simply want you to attend a session, talk for an hour and then walk away wondering what happens next.

Where appropriate, we build a bespoke programme around your circumstances and goals, supported by personalised workbooks, recordings and exercises that can continue the work between sessions.

Your sessions provide the opportunity to talk, explore and understand.

Your workbook gives you somewhere to reflect and work.

Your recordings can allow you to revisit relevant material.

Your between-session exercises give you an opportunity to practise.

And your next session gives you the opportunity to return, reflect and build upon what you have discovered.

The work doesn’t necessarily stop when the session ends.

It can continue with you — at home, between appointments and at a pace that respects your individual circumstances.

That is what we mean when we say our programmes are bespoke.

Not because we promise a particular outcome.

Not because we believe one approach works for everyone.

But because we believe that the person sitting in front of us deserves to be treated as a person — not a template.
