Two Years On. The Night I Walked Away, I Took My Life Back.

Two years ago, in the middle of the night, I walked three kilometres into the darkness to escape 32 years of abuse. I was leaving behind a marriage, a life, and a version of myself that had spent far too long surviving what no one should ever have to endure.

That night, I wasn’t walking towards a new life because I knew what was waiting for me. I was walking away because I finally understood that staying was costing me everything.

I had no idea then just how much of myself I would rediscover, how peaceful life could feel, or how different the world would look when I was no longer living under a cloud of fear, control, humiliation and emotional and financial torment.

I thought I was walking away from my past. In reality, I was walking towards myself.

Two years later, I can finally see the difference between the life I endured and the life I deserve.

And the difference is everything.

I breathe differently. I sleep differently. I think differently. I laugh more. I feel calmer, more confident and more connected to the world around me. I appreciate the simplest things that once seemed so far away: peace in my own home, genuine friendships, laughter without fear, freedom without permission and the ability to make decisions without anticipating somebody else’s reaction.

I am discovering experiences, places and feelings that I had forgotten existed. I am meeting people who show me what normal, healthy relationships look like. I am learning that affection can be genuine, kindness can come without conditions, and love does not have to be earned through sacrifice, people-pleasing or constantly proving your worth.

I no longer confuse walking on eggshells with keeping the peace. I no longer confuse surviving with living.

I have also learned that leaving is not the end of the journey. Sometimes, it is the beginning of finally understanding what you have lived through and recognising just how much you were missing.

Two years on, I am not the woman who walked out into the darkness that night. I am a woman who has found her way back to herself.

My past is part of my story, but it no longer gets to write my future.

I cannot change the years that were lost. I cannot reclaim every birthday, Christmas, holiday or happy occasion that was overshadowed. But I can choose what happens next.

And that is exactly what I am doing.

Today, I choose peace. I choose laughter. I choose adventure, meaningful connections, new experiences and the freedom to be completely myself. I choose people whose presence makes life feel lighter, not heavier. I choose a life where happiness is something I experience, not something I have to fight to protect.

This is not about pretending the past never happened. It is about knowing that it happened, understanding its impact, and refusing to let it define the rest of my life.

Two years on. A new life. A new day. A new me.

And perhaps the most beautiful realisation of all is that life wasn’t over when I walked away.

It was finally beginning. ❤️
