Trauma, Anger & Emotional Regulation Therapy

When Anger Is More Than Anger

Sometimes anger is the emotion we can see. Trauma is what lies underneath.

If you find yourself becoming increasingly angry, reactive, defensive, withdrawn or emotionally overwhelmed, you may wonder:

“Why am I reacting like this?”

You may understand intellectually that your reaction is bigger than the situation — but in the moment, it can feel impossible to stop.

That doesn’t mean there is something wrong with you.

Your emotional responses may have developed as ways of protecting you from experiences that were overwhelming, painful or threatening.

You can learn a different response.

Trauma Can Change the Way You Respond

Traumatic or highly stressful experiences can affect how we perceive threat, process emotions and respond to situations that remind us of the past.

A tone of voice.

An argument.

Feeling rejected.

Being criticised.

Feeling controlled.

Someone withdrawing from you.

A difficult relationship.

These experiences can activate powerful emotional responses before you’ve had time to consciously process what is happening.

The result can be:

Anger • Irritability • Defensiveness • Emotional shutdown • Anxiety • Resentment • Hypervigilance • Overwhelm

Anger May Be Protecting Something Beneath It

Anger can sometimes sit on top of other emotions.

Underneath it may be:

  • Hurt
  • Fear
  • Shame
  • Grief
  • Rejection
  • Betrayal
  • Powerlessness
  • Loneliness
  • Feeling unheard
  • Feeling unsafe
  • Years of suppressed emotion

Understanding this doesn’t excuse harmful behaviour.

It gives you an opportunity to change the pattern.

Therapy for Men Over 40

Many men have learned to manage difficult emotions by pushing them down, staying busy or trying to solve the problem.

Eventually, however, suppressed emotions can emerge as anger, irritability, frustration or emotional withdrawal.

You may be successful in many areas of life while privately struggling with your emotions or relationships.

Therapy offers a confidential space to understand what is happening without judgement.

We can work on:

Anger • Emotional regulation • Relationships • Trauma • Communication • Stress • Boundaries • Self-awareness

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin.

Therapy for Women Over 40

Women can also carry years of accumulated emotional stress.

Perhaps you’ve spent years caring for everyone else, keeping the peace, tolerating difficult behaviour or putting your own needs last.

You may now feel angry, exhausted or emotionally overwhelmed.

You may be asking:

“Why am I so angry?”

“Why can’t I let go of what happened?”

“Why does this still affect me?”

Therapy can help you understand the connection between your experiences, your nervous system and your emotional responses.

Emotional Regulation — Not Emotional Suppression

The goal isn’t to make you stop feeling.

And it isn’t about becoming endlessly calm or accepting behaviour that isn’t acceptable.

Emotional regulation means developing the ability to notice what is happening inside you and choose how you respond.

You can learn to:

  • Recognise your triggers
  • Understand your emotional patterns
  • Notice early signs of escalation
  • Calm your nervous system
  • Respond rather than react
  • Communicate more effectively
  • Develop healthier boundaries
  • Process unresolved experiences
  • Reduce destructive relationship patterns
  • Build greater emotional resilience

A Trauma-Informed, Neuroscience-Based Approach

My approach combines trauma-informed therapy, neuroscience, emotional intelligence and emotional regulationto help you understand both the emotional and physiological sides of your reactions.

Rather than simply asking:

“How do I stop being angry?”

we can explore:

“What is my anger trying to tell me?”

“What triggers my nervous system?”

“Where did this response come from?”

“What do I need to feel safe and emotionally in control?”

And most importantly:

“How can I respond differently in the future?”

You Are Not Your Anger

Your reactions may have developed for a reason.

But they don’t have to control your future.

With the right support, you can develop greater awareness, emotional regulation and choice.

You can have difficult conversations without losing control.

You can set boundaries without explosive anger.

You can experience strong emotions without being overwhelmed by them.

And you can begin to feel like yourself again.
