One of the most unexpected gifts of healing has been the awakening of my senses.
The other evening I drove home through the mountains with the windows open. The cool night air gently brushed against my skin as the unmistakable scent of wild fennel drifted in from the roadside. It was such a simple moment, yet it felt extraordinary. For the first time in years, I wasn’t rushing, worrying, or surviving—I was simply present.
Swimming has become a completely different experience too. I don’t just move through the water; I truly feel it. Every ripple against my skin reminds me that I am alive, safe, and free.
My hearing seems more attuned than ever. I notice birds singing, leaves rustling in the breeze, and sounds that I barely registered before. Life has become richer, fuller, and more vibrant.
Even food tastes different. Flavours seem more intense, and I can distinguish individual herbs and spices that once passed unnoticed. Every meal has become something to savour rather than simply consume.
This heightened sensory awareness is something many people experience as they recover from prolonged trauma or chronic stress. When we are living in survival mode, the brain is focused on protecting us. It filters out much of the beauty around us because its priority is detecting danger.
As the nervous system begins to heal and feels safe again, the world gradually comes back into focus.
Colours appear brighter.
Nature feels more alive.
Music touches the heart.
Food becomes an experience.
The smallest moments begin to fill us with gratitude.
Healing isn’t simply about recovering from what happened to you. It is about reconnecting with yourself and rediscovering the extraordinary beauty that has always existed around you.
You begin to notice life again—not because the world has changed, but because you have.
