Today, I paused for a moment and realised just how far I have come.
I am incredibly proud of myself for finding the courage to walk away from a life that no longer reflected who I was. Leaving was not easy. It took years of questioning myself, rebuilding my confidence and believing that a different future was possible.
Walking away wasn’t giving up—it was choosing life.
Along the way, I discovered something equally important: there are people who can see the truth. People who listened without judgement, believed my story, stood beside me and reminded me that I deserved to be safe.
To every friend, professional and supporter who saw beyond the smile I wore and recognised what was really happening, thank you. Your kindness, encouragement and belief in me helped me take one step after another when the road ahead seemed impossible.
This afternoon I spent time with genuine friends.
There was laughter. There were honest conversations. There was peace.
For the first time in a very long time, I wasn’t waiting for the next criticism, the next argument or the next moment of fear. I was simply present, surrounded by people who wanted nothing from me except my company.
I felt loved.
I felt safe.
I felt free.
These moments may seem ordinary to some people, but to a survivor they are extraordinary. They are the moments that remind us what life is meant to feel like.
Healing is not about forgetting the past. It is about no longer allowing the past to define your future.
Today I choose gratitude over bitterness.
I choose peace over conflict.
I choose freedom over fear.
And I choose to celebrate how far I have come.
If you are reading this and wondering whether you will ever feel safe again, please don’t give up. There is life beyond abuse. There are people who will believe you. There is hope beyond fear.
One day, you too may find yourself sitting with genuine friends, surrounded by kindness, realising that your greatest act of courage was simply refusing to give up on yourself.
That day is worth fighting for.
