When an Abuser Invents a Story Under Oath… Then Expects You to Take Them Back

One of the most astonishing aspects of abusive relationships is not always the abuse itself. Sometimes it is what happens afterwards.

An abusive partner may deny everything, rewrite history, invent elaborate stories, and even swear under oath that their version of events is the truth. They may accuse their victim of lying, exaggerating, or being mentally unstable—all in an attempt to protect themselves from accountability.

Then, astonishingly, they may expect the very person they abused to forgive them, return to the relationship, and carry on as though nothing happened.

It is difficult to imagine a greater contradiction.

The Fantasy They Create

Many abusers believe that if they repeat a lie often enough, it becomes believable. They may convince family members, friends, colleagues, and even themselves that they are the victim.

This is not about finding the truth.

It is about controlling the narrative.

By creating an alternative version of reality, they hope to:

  • Avoid responsibility for their actions.
  • Protect their public image.
  • Damage the credibility of the person they harmed.
  • Continue exercising control, even after separation.

When legal proceedings begin, this behaviour may become even more extreme. Some individuals are willing to swear to events that never happened if they believe it will help them avoid consequences.

Why Would Anyone Go Back?

From the outside, the expectation seems absurd.

After years of manipulation, intimidation, humiliation, or violence, why would anyone willingly return to someone who has publicly denied the abuse and accused them of dishonesty?

The answer is—they usually don’t.

Recovery brings clarity.

As healing progresses, survivors begin to recognise the gap between words and actions. They see the manipulation for what it is rather than what they once hoped it would become.

The idea of returning often changes from something they feared they might do into something they simply cannot imagine.

Accountability Matters

Healthy relationships are built on honesty, empathy, accountability, and respect.

When someone refuses to acknowledge the harm they have caused and instead creates fictional accounts to defend themselves, meaningful reconciliation becomes almost impossible.

Trust cannot grow where truth is absent.

A relationship cannot heal when one person continues to rewrite reality.

The Delusion of Entitlement

Perhaps the most striking feature is the sense of entitlement.

Some abusers genuinely believe they deserve another chance despite:

  • Years of abusive behaviour.
  • Repeated dishonesty.
  • Attempts to manipulate the legal system.
  • Publicly attacking the character of the person they harmed.

They may be shocked when their former partner refuses to return.

What they fail to understand is that respect, trust, and love cannot coexist with deception and abuse.

For Survivors

If someone has abused you, denied it, invented stories, and attempted to convince others that you were the problem, you are not obliged to defend yourself to everyone.

The people who matter will judge you by your consistency, your integrity, and your actions over time.

Healing is not about proving your innocence to someone committed to misunderstanding you.

It is about reclaiming your life.

The greatest response is often not anger or revenge.

It is living peacefully, building healthy relationships, and refusing to return to a life built on manipulation, fear, and lies.

Sometimes the most powerful statement you can make is simply this:

“I know the truth. I have nothing to return to.”
