Many people believe that healing comes from understanding—analysing the past, gaining insight, and making sense of what happened. And while awareness is important, it is often not enough.
This is where many people feel stuck.
They understand their patterns.
They can explain their experiences.
They know why they feel the way they do.
And yet, nothing truly changes.
The reason lies in the difference between healing from the mind and healing through the body.
Healing from the Mind: Where Many People Get Stuck
Healing from the mind is rooted in thinking. It involves reflection, analysis, and trying to “figure things out.”
This often looks like:
- overthinking situations or relationships
- replaying past experiences
- searching for answers through logic
- constantly trying to understand emotions rather than feel them
From a neuroscience perspective, this process is largely driven by the thinking part of the brain. While this can create awareness, it does not always create change.
Because emotional pain is not stored only as thought—it is also stored in the body.
This is why someone can fully understand a situation and still feel anxious, triggered, or emotionally unsettled.
Healing Through the Body: Where Real Change Happens
True healing begins when the body is involved.
Our emotional experiences are deeply connected to the nervous system, particularly the Autonomic Nervous System, which regulates our stress responses.
When the body is in a state of stress—often referred to as fight, flight, or freeze—the mind reflects that state through:
- anxious thinking
- emotional reactivity
- difficulty letting go
In contrast, when the body feels safe and regulated, the mind naturally becomes calmer and clearer.
This is why healed individuals often experience a shift not just in how they think, but in how they feel.
They are no longer constantly triggered.
They no longer overanalyse everything.
They experience a sense of calm without needing to force it.
Why the Body Holds Emotional Memory
The body retains emotional experiences, especially those linked to stress or trauma. These experiences can remain in the nervous system long after the situation has passed.
This means that even when the mind understands that something is “over,” the body may still react as if it is happening in the present.
Until the body is able to release and regulate these responses, the cycle continues.
From Overthinking to Regulation
The key difference between staying stuck and moving forward is not more thinking—it is regulation.
Healing through the body involves:
- allowing emotions to be felt rather than analysed
- calming the nervous system through breath and movement
- reducing exposure to stress and overstimulation
- creating environments and relationships that feel safe and supportive
- prioritising rest, nutrition, and overall wellbeing
Over time, these practices signal to the body that it is safe. And when the body feels safe, the mind no longer needs to stay in a constant state of alert.
A Shift in Experience, Not Just Understanding
The difference between mind-based and body-based healing is not subtle—it is transformational.
A person healing only through the mind may say:
“I understand everything, but I still feel the same.”
A person healing through the body experiences something very different:
“I feel calm, grounded, and no longer react the way I used to.”
This shift happens naturally when the nervous system changes.
Conclusion: Healing Is Felt, Not Just Thought
Understanding is an important part of the process—but it is only the beginning.
Real healing occurs when the body is included—when the nervous system is supported, emotions are processed, and a sense of safety is restored from within.
Because ultimately, healing is not about thinking your way out of pain.
It is about creating a state where your mind and body no longer feel the need to hold onto it.
