Believe the Behaviour, Not the Excuse

Believe the Behaviour, Not the Excuse

Pay attention to what people consistently show you.

If they repeatedly show disrespect, contempt, hostility, anger, indifference, or a lack of empathy, don’t dismiss it. Don’t make excuses for them. Don’t convince yourself they didn’t mean it.

Psychology has long recognised that behaviour is one of the most reliable indicators of underlying attitudes. While everyone has bad days, repeated patterns reveal far more than words ever will.

Neuroscience also tells us that our emotional responses and habits become deeply ingrained. The brain develops predictable patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving. When someone repeatedly treats you with contempt or disrespect, they are revealing a pattern—not making a one-off mistake.

People can say they love you. They can apologise. They can promise to change. But lasting change is demonstrated through consistent behaviour, not repeated explanations.

When someone’s actions repeatedly leave you feeling diminished, afraid, unimportant, or unloved, believe what their behaviour is telling you.

Don’t ignore the evidence. Protect your peace by believing patterns, not promises.
