She offered her partner £50,000 to start a new life. Instead, he brutally murdered her

A retired Old Bailey judge warned domestic abuse victims to “get out” before trying to end an abusive relationship, as the killer of his “unbelievably brave” daughter was jailed for life. Charity worker Annabel Rook, 46, was stabbed to death in the living room of her own home by Clifton George, 45, who erupted in a furious rage as she tried to end their 10-year-relationship.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how George had a short fuse and would lose his temper at trivial matters and perceived slights, often taking his anger out on Ms Rook. Her father, retired Judge Peter Rook, described his daughter as altruistic, non-judgmental and “one of the world’s great life enhancers”, and says he believes she stuck with George despite his failings because she wanted to help him. Mr Rook and his wife Susanna revealed the nature and scale of George’s abuse was kept hidden, and they only learned the extent of their daughter’s suffering after her death when it was laid out in evidence at trial.
