When love turns out to be your favourite person to play padel with, swim with, laugh with… and steal the last roast potato from.
There comes a point in life when you stop looking for the fairy tale and start appreciating the little things that make a relationship feel truly special. And then, just when you least expect it, someone comes along who makes you wonder whether perhaps the fairy tale has been hiding in plain sight all along!
Someone who takes a genuine interest in everything you do. Padel? He’s interested. Swimming? He’s there. Exercise classes? Why not! Before you know it, you have acquired not just a companion but a willing participant in your increasingly busy social and sporting calendar. I haven’t quite persuaded him to take up ballet yet, but give me time!
It’s the shared enjoyment of the simplest things that makes the difference. Enjoying the same food, cooking for one another, deciding what to eat without a diplomatic summit, and discovering that someone else actually likes the things you like. Even better, someone who doesn’t just tolerate your interests but genuinely wants to be part of them.
And then there is the laughter. Oh, the laughter! The kind where you look at each other and start giggling over something completely ridiculous, probably something nobody else would find remotely funny. The kind where an ordinary Tuesday suddenly becomes a lovely day simply because you’re together.
But beneath all the fun is something much more meaningful: mutual care, consideration, kindness and the ability to listen. Not just waiting for your turn to speak, but actually hearing one another. Remembering the little things. Checking that you’re okay. Cooking a meal because you know the other person will enjoy it. Making plans together because you genuinely want to, rather than because you feel obliged to.
It sounds so simple, doesn’t it? Yet sometimes the simplest things are the very things that have been missing for far too long.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is discovering that a relationship doesn’t have to be complicated to be wonderful. You don’t have to analyse every message, question someone’s intentions, or wonder where you stand. You can simply enjoy each other’s company, make each other laugh, try new things and allow something lovely to develop naturally.
Of course, I’m not about to order a glass slipper or start measuring the castle curtains just yet. At my age, I’ve learnt that even Prince Charming should be given a reasonable amount of time to demonstrate that he can put the toilet seat down, remember where he parked the car and survive assembling a flat-pack wardrobe without declaring war on the instructions!
And let’s be honest, the real test of compatibility is not whether he looks handsome on a romantic evening out. It’s whether you still like each other after a competitive game of padel, when one of you has lost spectacularly, both of you are hungry, and neither can agree on which restaurant to choose.
But there is something rather wonderful about reaching a stage in life when you know yourself, understand what matters, and no longer feel the need to settle for less than a relationship that brings genuine happiness.
You appreciate the freedom to be yourself. You value your independence. You don’t need someone to complete you, because you have already built a life of your own. What you would love, however, is someone who adds to it. Someone who brings companionship, affection, laughter and a little extra sparkle to the everyday.
And perhaps that is what makes this feel so special. It isn’t about being rescued or swept off your feet. It’s about two people choosing to spend their time together because life really is more enjoyable when they do.
It’s about having someone to share the adventures with, someone to cook for, someone who makes you smile when their name appears on your phone, and someone whose company you look forward to even when the grand plan for the day is absolutely nothing.
After all, romance isn’t always candlelit dinners, expensive presents and dramatic declarations of undying love. Sometimes it’s a cup of coffee made just the way you like it, a hand reaching for yours, a shared joke, or someone asking how your day went and genuinely wanting to hear the answer.
And sometimes, after a very long time coming, it’s simply meeting someone who feels like a breath of fresh air.
So, have I finally found my prince?
Well, I’m keeping my feet firmly on the ground, my sense of humour intact and my expectations realistic. But I’m smiling a little more, laughing a little louder and thoroughly enjoying discovering what each new day brings.
And if he continues to join me for padel, swimming, exercise classes, good food and endless laughter, he may just find himself being considered for a permanent position.
The job comes with excellent company, occasional kitchen experiments, a very enthusiastic black Labrador and absolutely no guarantee that I won’t beat him at padel.
The salary? A happy life, shared adventures, affection, laughter and the pleasure of having found someone who genuinely wants to be there.
Not a bad offer, really.
Perhaps Prince Charming does exist after all. He just arrived without the white horse, wearing sports shoes, and looking for somewhere nice to have lunch.
And do you know what?
I think I rather like him that way. ❤️👑
Because sometimes the most beautiful chapter of your life begins when you stop searching for a fairy tale and discover someone with whom you can make real life feel magical.
