When Someone Else Always Pays

Over the years, I began to notice a pattern.

There always seemed to be a reason why someone else should pay. Someone else should carry the burden. Someone else should solve the problem.

I remember hearing a story about a bait boat that was said never to have arrived, with someone else reportedly paying for the delivery. Later, I spoke to the person who had actually delivered it, and it left me questioning the version of events I had been told.

That wasn’t really about a bait boat.

It was about a mindset.

When people spend their lives expecting others to pick up the bill—financially, emotionally or morally—they rarely take responsibility for their own choices.

Whether it’s borrowing money, expecting favours, shifting blame or finding someone else to absorb the cost, the pattern remains the same. Accountability is replaced by entitlement.

There is an old saying: the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Sometimes, behaviours are learned over generations until they become normal within a family.

I have learned that I cannot change people who refuse to accept responsibility.

What I can do is refuse to become the person who keeps paying the price.

Today, I pay my own way. I stand on my own feet. I sleep peacefully, knowing that my life is built on honesty, hard work and integrity.

That is worth far more than anything money can buy.
