Addiction

Addiction is a complex neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and strong urge to engage in maladaptive behaviors that offer immediate sensory rewards, such as drug consumption or excessive gambling, even in the face of harmful consequences. Dependence is a subtype of addiction that can involve withdrawal symptoms. Addictive disorders fall within the category of mental disorders, marked by significant intensities of addiction or dependence leading to functional impairments. It’s important to note that there is no universally agreed-upon set of definitions for these terms, as discussed in the relevant section.

Repetitive drug use has the capacity to alter brain function, perpetuating cravings and weakening, but not entirely eliminating, an individual’s self-control. This phenomenon, where drugs reshape brain function, has led to the conceptualization of addiction as a brain disorder influenced by a complex interplay of psychosocial and neurobiological factors, some of which are involuntary.

Classic indicators of addiction encompass compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli, an intense preoccupation with substances or behaviors, and the persistence of usage despite the presence of negative consequences. Habits and behaviors associated with addiction often offer immediate gratification (short-term rewards) but come with delayed adverse effects (long-term costs).

Examples of substance addictions encompass alcoholism, marijuana addiction, amphetamine addiction, cocaine addiction, nicotine addiction, opioid addiction, and food or eating addiction. Alternatively, behavioral addictions can include gambling addiction, internet addiction, social media addiction, video game addiction, and sexual addiction. It’s worth noting that while the DSM-5 and ICD-10 recognize gambling addiction as a behavioral addiction, the ICD-11 also acknowledges gaming addiction.

This understanding of addiction highlights the intricate interplay between neurobiology and psychology, shedding light on the mechanisms behind addictive behaviors and their long-term consequences.
