Financial Pressure and the Threat of Losing an Inheritance

Money can be used as a powerful tool of control.

Some people are pressured into remaining silent because they fear losing an inheritance or other financial support. This may be expressed directly or indirectly.

Examples include:

  • “If you tell anyone, you’ll be written out of the will.”
  • “Keep quiet if you expect to inherit anything.”
  • “Don’t challenge the family, or you’ll get nothing.”
  • “If you report this, don’t expect any financial help.”
  • “You’ll lose your inheritance if you take legal action.”
  • “Stay loyal to the family if you want to benefit later.”
  • “Don’t embarrass the family—you know what’s at stake.”
  • “You’ll regret speaking out.”

When financial threats are used to stop someone from telling the truth, seeking help, reporting abuse, or making their own decisions, they may form part of a pattern of coercion and control.

Every person has the right to make decisions free from intimidation or financial blackmail. No inheritance, gift, or promise of future financial benefit should be used to pressure someone into remaining silent about abuse, criminal behaviour, or other serious wrongdoing.

A healthy family relationship is based on respect, honesty, and freedom of choice—not fear of financial punishment.
