Parents Who Encourage Cheating, Lying, and Disrespect

Parents are a child’s first teachers.

Children learn values not from lectures, but from what they see, hear, and experience every day. When parents encourage honesty, integrity, and respect, children are more likely to develop those qualities themselves.

But when parents encourage cheating, lying, manipulation, or disrespect, they teach a very different lesson.

A parent who tells a child that rules only apply to other people teaches entitlement.

A parent who encourages dishonesty teaches that truth is optional.

A parent who rewards deceit teaches that getting what you want matters more than doing what is right.

A parent who constantly disrespects others teaches that kindness and empathy are weaknesses.

Over time, these messages become part of a child’s belief system.

Children may learn that:

  • Lying is acceptable if it brings an advantage.
  • Cheating is justified if you can get away with it.
  • Respect is only for people who can benefit you.
  • Accountability is something to avoid.
  • Other people’s feelings do not matter.

The consequences often extend far beyond childhood. These behaviours can damage friendships, relationships, careers, and family bonds. People who grow up believing that dishonesty and manipulation are normal often struggle to build trust with others.

Perhaps most importantly, children notice contradictions. A parent who demands honesty while lying, or demands respect while showing none, teaches confusion rather than values.

Strong character is not built by words alone.

It is built by example.

Parents who demonstrate honesty, integrity, responsibility, and respect leave a lasting legacy. Parents who encourage cheating, lying, and disrespect may also leave a legacy—but it is one that can take generations to repair.

The values children see today often become the values they carry into adulthood.

The question every parent should ask is simple:

What am I teaching my child when they are watching me?
