Before You Ignore a Cry for Help… Think Again

The next message you receive could be from your child.

Your sister.

Your brother.

Your best friend.

Your neighbour.

Your partner.

Your parent.

Or someone who has spent weeks building up the courage to ask for help.

Please don’t dismiss them.

Don’t ridicule them.

Don’t tell them to “get over it.”

Don’t assume someone else will step in.

And don’t underestimate how difficult it is for many people to admit they are struggling.

You don’t have to have the perfect words.

You don’t have to solve their problems.

You simply have to listen.

Ask them how they are.

Take them seriously.

Stay with them.

Help them find the right support if they need it.

Sometimes, one compassionate conversation can give a person the strength to take the next step towards safety and recovery.

Never assume a cry for help is attention-seeking.

Assume it is courage.

Because asking for help is one of the bravest things a human being can do.

One day, the person reaching out could be someone you love.

Or it could be you.

So before you scroll past.

Before you ignore the message.

Before you tell yourself someone else will respond.

Pause.

Listen.

Care.

Your kindness may not solve everything, but it could remind someone that they are not alone—and sometimes, that is exactly where hope begins.
