Locking phones

There are several reasons why someone might keep an old phone locked, even if they’re not actively using it. Here are some common scenarios:

1. Privacy & Security Concerns

  • Stored Personal Data – Old messages, emails, photos, or financial information may still be on the device. Keeping it locked prevents unauthorized access.
  • Cloud & Account Access – Many old phones remain linked to iCloud, Google, or banking apps. If left unlocked, someone could retrieve sensitive information.
  • Potential Spyware Risks – If an old phone was bugged (especially in a divorce case), keeping it locked prevents further remote access or misuse.

2. Evidence Preservation (Legal or Personal Reasons)

  • Legal Cases – If the phone contains texts, call logs, or location data relevant to a divorce, lawsuit, or financial dispute, keeping it locked preserves its integrity.
  • Digital Forensics – If someone suspects their phone was hacked or bugged, cybersecurity experts can examine it for spyware. Unlocking it prematurely might alter evidence.

3. Secondary or Emergency Use

  • Backup Device – Many people keep an old phone as a backup in case their new one breaks. Keeping it locked prevents misuse if lost or stolen.
  • Emergency Calls – Even without a SIM card, most phones can still call emergency services. If it’s locked, only the owner can use it when necessary.

4. Preventing Unauthorized Access (Ex-Spouses, Family, or Others)

  • Restricting Access to an Ex – In high-conflict divorces, an old phone may contain evidence of abuse, financial records, or communication history that an ex might want to access. Locking it prevents tampering.
  • Children or Family Members – If a child or family member has access, keeping it locked ensures they can’t accidentally delete important data.

5. Linked Accounts & Remote Controls

  • Apple ID & Google Sync – Even if you’re not using an old phone, if it’s still logged into your Apple or Google account, unlocking it could trigger unintended syncs, backups, or account access.
  • Find My Phone & Remote Wipe – A locked device with “Find My iPhone” or Google’s Find My Deviceactivated can be remotely wiped or tracked if lost.

6. Keeping It Locked Until It’s Safely Wiped

  • Before selling, donating, or disposing of a phone, people often keep it locked until they can perform a factory reset to ensure personal data is completely erased.
