The contrast between public empathy and private cruelty is unsettling, especially when someone presents as deeply understanding or compassionate. This kind of duplicity often comes down to the fact that empathy and kindness, when displayed publicly, can be quite powerful tools. Social norms reward behaviors that are seen as kind, caring, and understanding, and these qualities often earn trust, approval, and influence. However, people who use empathy as a facade but lack genuine compassion can weaponize these behaviors, manipulating others to fulfill their own needs without any real regard for the emotional well-being of those around them.
From a psychological perspective, people with these traits may have personality disorders or traits on the dark triad spectrum—narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy—though this isn’t always the case. Some may simply lack emotional intelligence and empathy in a genuine, integrated way but have learned to emulate these traits because they see their social value. In other words, they might recognize that people respond well to empathy, so they mimic it for personal gain. This behavior can be distressing for those who find themselves connected to or dependent on such people, as it creates a painful and confusing dissonance between the individual’s public and private personas.
This can also deeply affect those who are particularly empathetic or trusting, often leading them to second-guess their own judgments about others. Discovering that someone you thought was kind and empathetic is actually cold and cruel behind closed doors can even lead to feelings of betrayal or trauma, as it forces a person to re-evaluate their own ability to perceive character and intentions accurately.
