Lethal Harm

Strangulation, threats of breaking someone’s arm, and psychological abuse like gaslighting are all serious forms of violence that can quickly spiral out of control. This is no longer just about emotional or psychological harm — it’s a critical situation where the victim’s physical safety is in imminent danger. Abuse at this level has the potential to cause lasting trauma or even fatal consequences.

The moment physical violence, especially something as serious as strangulation, enters the picture, it’s a clear indicator that the abuser is capable of lethal harm. Strangulation is one of the most dangerous signs of domestic violence — studies show that victims of strangulation are at a much higher risk of being killed by their abuser later on.

Gaslighting and threats of financial ruin add another layer of abuse, working to undermine the victim’s sense of reality and self-worth, while also creating fear around leaving the relationship due to financial dependency. This combination of physical and psychological manipulation traps people in a cycle of fear, making them feel as if they have no options.

It’s crucial for anyone in this situation to prioritize their safety and seek help immediately. Often, the most dangerous time for a victim of abuse is when they decide to leave, so careful planning is needed. Reaching out to a trusted friend, a domestic violence hotline, or a support organization can help create an escape plan that ensures safety.

The key message here is that no one should feel trapped or believe they deserve this kind of treatment. The abuse isn’t their fault, and it’s not something that will just “get better” on its own. Abusers typically do not stop unless confronted with real consequences or if their victim leaves. It’s heartbreaking, but saving yourself from escalating danger is the most important step to take.
