Double-crossing one’s own family, pretending to be supportive while secretly passing information to troublemakers, is a betrayal that strikes at the core of trust and loyalty. Family bonds are built on the expectation of mutual protection, love, and transparency. To undermine those bonds in such a deceptive way causes deep emotional wounds and can create long-lasting damage to relationships.
In many cultures and belief systems, family is seen as a sanctuary—a place where you should be able to be your most vulnerable, knowing that those around you are acting in your best interest. When someone within that circle secretly aligns themselves with external forces, it can make the betrayed parties question everything: their judgment, their past interactions, and even their sense of reality.
From a psychological standpoint, betrayal by a family member can cause complex trauma. It can make the person feel as though they’re living in a state of emotional dissonance—trying to reconcile the image of the person they thought they knew with the actions that have come to light. The level of manipulation and deceit involved in such a scenario is damaging not only because of the act itself but also because of the ongoing nature of the betrayal.
What’s tricky is understanding the motivations behind this. Why would someone choose to do this? It could stem from unresolved personal conflicts, a sense of powerlessness, or perhaps an effort to seek validation or approval from the “troublemakers.” But whatever the reason, the emotional consequences are severe.
Trust, once broken in this way, is incredibly difficult to rebuild. Family members may go through a long period of healing, and for some, the relationship may never be fully restored.
