Indirect Contact

When someone goes quiet, it’s impossible to know their thoughts with certainty. However, psychology does show a few subtle behavioural signs that sometimes suggest a person hasn’t completely emotionally disconnected. These are not guarantees, but they can give clues. 💭

1. They Reappear Casually

Instead of having a direct conversation, they might suddenly send something small like:

  • a simple “Hi”
  • a meme or song
  • reacting to a message or story

This often happens because they are thinking about you but unsure how to restart the connection, so they test the water with a low-pressure message.

2. Indirect Contact

Sometimes people who feel uncertain still try to maintain a small psychological connection.

Examples include:

  • watching social media stories consistently
  • liking older posts
  • asking mutual friends about you

This behaviour often comes from curiosity mixed with hesitation.

3. Emotional Intensity Before the Silence

If the connection was very emotionally open or intense before they disappeared, it’s actually quite common for the person to think about the interaction later.

Intense conversations activate strong memory encoding in the brain, especially when dopamine and oxytocin are involved. Even if someone withdraws, those memories often stay vivid for a long time.

An Important Perspective

Even if someone is thinking about you, what matters more is their behaviour going forward.

Real interest usually shows itself through:

  • consistent communication
  • emotional clarity
  • willingness to reconnect openly

Thinking about someone and showing up for them are two very different things.

A Grounding Thought

Instead of focusing on “Are they thinking about me?”, a healthier question can be:

“Is this connection giving me peace or uncertainty?”

The answer to that often reveals much more about whether a relationship is truly right for you.
