Pet Safety Checklist for Escaping Domestic Abuse

1. Prepare in Advance

  • Identify safe friends, family, or boarding options for your pet.
  • Pack a Pet Emergency Kit:
    • Food & water for at least 3 days
    • Medications & supplements
    • Leash, harness, carrier, or crate
    • Favorite toys or comfort items
    • Copies of vaccination records and ownership documents
    • Recent photos of your pet

2. Secure Identification

  • Ensure pets have ID tags with your current contact info.
  • Microchip your pet and update registration information.

3. Plan Your Escape

  • Choose multiple exit routes from your home.
  • Keep your pet’s emergency kit and carrier ready in a safe, accessible location.

4. Use Safe Housing

  • Research pet-friendly domestic violence shelters or temporary foster programs.
  • Contact organizations such as:
    • RedRover – emergency boarding grants
    • The Humane Society – advice & local shelter contacts
    • Pets of the Homeless – temporary pet support

5. Legal Protection

  • Ask about including your pet in restraining orders if applicable.
  • Keep proof of ownership (vet records, receipts, microchip info).

6. Reach Out

  • Let a trusted friend or advocate know your plan.
  • Call local domestic violence hotlines for guidance on pets in emergency situations.

7. After Escape

  • Keep your pet’s routine as normal as possible to reduce stress.
  • Seek counseling for both you and your pet if needed—they can experience trauma too.
