Behind Closed Doors – keeping up the pretence

When you witness someone you care about being mistreated, it’s natural to want to speak out and seek justice or at least validation for what they’ve been through. It can feel deeply frustrating when others don’t believe or understand the truth of the situation.

One of the most challenging aspects of situations like this is that abuse can often occur behind closed doors, making it harder for others to see or believe. It’s important to remember that people’s responses may stem from a lack of awareness, personal biases, or even a desire to avoid confronting difficult truths. It doesn’t make what you or your loved one experienced any less valid or real.

Here are a few thoughts that might help navigate this difficult situation:

  1. Document Your Concerns: If possible and safe to do so, keep a record of what you’ve witnessed or what your loved one has shared with you. Documentation can lend credibility to your account and help others understand the severity of the situation.
  2. Seek Support: Find someone you trust who can listen to your concerns without judgment. This could be a friend, family member, therapist, or support group. Having someone validate your feelings can be incredibly validating and empowering.
  3. Encourage Your Loved One: Let your loved one know that you believe them and support them. Sometimes, knowing that even one person believes them can make a world of difference.
  4. Consider Professional Help: If the situation involves abuse or serious mistreatment, consider consulting with a professional, such as a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance on how to navigate the complexities of abuse and offer support to both you and your loved one.
  5. Educate Others: If appropriate and safe, you might also consider raising awareness about the issues of abuse and manipulation. Educating others can help break down misconceptions and create a more supportive environment.

Remember, advocating for someone who has been mistreated can be emotionally taxing. Taking care of yourself throughout this process is crucial. It’s okay to seek support for yourself as well, whether through friends, family, or professional help.
