Examples of Emotional Abuse

Here are some examples of how emotional abuse can become normalized in a family or relationship:

  • A parent who constantly criticizes their child’s appearance, intelligence, or abilities.
  • A partner who isolates their partner from their friends and family.
  • A parent who gaslights their child by making them question their own reality.
  • A partner who threatens their partner with violence or financial ruin.
  • A parent who uses guilt and shame to control their child.
  • A partner who humiliates their partner in public.

When a child is exposed to emotional abuse on a regular basis, they may start to believe that this is normal behavior. They may internalize these abusive behaviors and carry them into adulthood, perpetuating the cycle.

For example, a child who is constantly criticized by their parent may grow up to be an adult who is very insecure and has difficulty accepting compliments. A child who is isolated from their friends and family by their partner may grow up to be an adult who has difficulty forming and maintaining close relationships.

It is important to note that emotional abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or social status. However, children are particularly vulnerable to emotional abuse because they are still developing and are more likely to trust the adults in their lives.

If you are concerned that you or someone you know may be experiencing emotional abuse, it is important to reach out for help. There are a number of resources available, including therapists, counselors, and support groups.
