Going out with someone (dating)

This is the getting-to-know-you stage.

  • You spend time together, but it’s not defined
  • No clear expectations or commitments
  • Either person may still see others
  • Plans can be casual or last-minute
  • You’re exploring compatibility

👉 Think: “We’re seeing how this goes.”

🔹 A relationship

This is a defined, mutual agreement.

  • You’ve both agreed you’re together
  • There’s consistency and reliability
  • Expectations are clearer (time, communication, effort)
  • Usually exclusive
  • You’re building something, not just exploring

👉 Think: “We’ve chosen each other.”

🔑 The core difference

  • Dating = possibility
  • Relationship = decision

🔴 The simplest test

If you have to ask:

“What are we?”

You’re probably still dating, not in a relationship.
