Eating Disorders

Eating disorders encompass a range of conditions characterized by unhealthy eating habits and attitudes towards food, weight, and body image. Here are the main types of eating disorders:

  1. Anorexia Nervosa: Characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight, leading to restricted food intake and an obsession with maintaining a very low body weight.
  2. Bulimia Nervosa: Involves cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors like self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, or the misuse of laxatives or diuretics to avoid weight gain.
  3. Binge Eating Disorder (BED): Involves recurrent episodes of consuming large quantities of food, often rapidly and to the point of discomfort, without the compensatory behaviors seen in bulimia.
  4. Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED): Formerly known as Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), OSFED includes disordered eating patterns that don’t fit the criteria for anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder but still cause significant distress or impairment.
  5. Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): Involves limitations in the amount and variety of food intake, often due to sensory issues, lack of interest in eating, or fear of negative consequences (not related to body weight or shape).
  6. Orthorexia Nervosa: Characterized by an obsession with healthy eating to the point that it becomes restrictive and detrimental to overall well-being.

These disorders can significantly impact physical health, mental well-being, and quality of life. Seeking professional help and support is essential for effective treatment and recovery.
