Never wrestle with a pig

The saying “Never wrestle with a pig” is often attributed to George Bernard Shaw and goes like this:

“Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.”

This idiom conveys the idea that engaging in a dispute or conflict with certain people is futile and unproductive. The metaphor suggests that, like wrestling with a pig, such conflicts will leave you both messy and exhausted, but the other party (the “pig”) thrives in such situations and derives enjoyment from the chaos and dirt.

In a broader sense, it advises avoiding arguments with individuals who thrive on controversy or negativity, as they may drag you down to their level and benefit from your frustration and effort.
