Dalai Lama

When asked what surprised him most about humanity the Dalai Lama answered

“Man sacrifices his health in order to make money

Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present,

the result being that he does not live in the present or the future

he lives as if he is never going to die and then dies having never really lived”

— Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama’s reflection on humanity’s priorities is both profound and thought-provoking. It highlights the paradoxical nature of our pursuits and the tendency to overlook the importance of living in the present moment.

It’s fascinating how many people find themselves caught in a cycle of sacrificing their well-being for financial success, only to realize later the need to invest that hard-earned money in regaining their health. This cyclical pattern raises questions about the true essence of a fulfilling life and the priorities we set for ourselves.

Moreover, the Dalai Lama’s observation about anxiety regarding the future preventing the enjoyment of the present resonates with the common tendency to get so preoccupied with what lies ahead that we forget to savor the current moment. It’s a reminder to find a balance between planning for the future and appreciating the beauty of the present.

In essence, his words encourage us to embrace the concept of mindfulness, urging us to live fully in the present rather than being consumed by worries about the future or regrets about the past. It’s a timeless message that prompts reflection on the way we lead our lives and the choices we make in pursuit of happiness and fulfillment.
