Love with benefits

Sometimes what presents itself as “love with benefits” is, on closer inspection, simply benefits in search of love — preferably with a direct debit attached.

There’s a subtle psychological distinction between genuine emotional connection and instrumental relating. One is rooted in curiosity, reciprocity, and shared emotional presence. The other begins with unmet needs, entitlement, and a quiet assessment of what resources might be available — financial, practical, emotional, or otherwise.

True connection asks: Who are you?
Transactional connection asks: What can you provide?

When romance arrives with an unspoken job description — carer, therapist, housekeeper, financier — one can’t help but admire the efficiency, if not the romance. After all, nothing says passion quite like a spreadsheet of expectations.

Thankfully, real love still exists — the kind built on mutual care, shared responsibility, emotional safety, laughter, and respect. And it remains infinitely more attractive than any arrangement that slowly drains both spirit and savings. ✨
