I used to think being alone would feel empty. After decades of chaos, silence felt scary at first. But hereās what Iāve discovered: living on your own can be both healing and hilarious ā especially when you have a dog. š¶āØ
Neuroscience tells us that trauma rewires the brain for hypervigilance ā always on edge, always scanning. But pets actually help regulate the nervous system. Research shows that cuddling your dog lowers cortisol (stress hormone) and boosts oxytocin (the ābondingā hormone). Translation: your dog is literally healing your brain while begging for snacks. š
Sure, I donāt have a human partner right now. But letās be honestā¦
- My dog listens better than most dates ever did.
- They never play games (except fetch).
- Theyāre consistent, loyal, andĀ alwaysĀ excited to see me come home.
- And best of all: they donāt gaslight me when I eat the last cookie.
So no, Iām not āalone.ā Iāve got paws, wagging tails, unconditional love, and a whole lot of slobbery kisses. š¾
Iām not looking for anyone right now. Iām waiting for the right one ā the one who feels like safety, not survival. ā¤ļø Until then, Iām practicing trust, laughter, and peace⦠with my dog as my co-therapist. šāØ
