A to Z – Bipolar

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings or episodes of mania and depression. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience periods of intense emotional highs, known as manic episodes, where they may feel euphoric, impulsive, and have increased energy. These are often followed by depressive episodes, marked by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and low energy.

There are different types of bipolar disorder, including Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and Cyclothymic Disorder. Bipolar I involves manic episodes that last at least seven days, while Bipolar II involves both depressive and hypomanic episodes. Cyclothymic Disorder is a milder form with periods of hypomania and mild depression that can last for at least two years.

The exact cause of bipolar disorder is not fully understood, but it is believed to be influenced by a combination of genetic, biological, and environmental factors. It’s essential for individuals with bipolar disorder to receive proper diagnosis and treatment, often involving mood stabilizers, psychotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments.

Understanding and managing bipolar disorder require a comprehensive approach that considers both medical and psychological aspects. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of bipolar disorder, seeking professional help is crucial for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
