What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach that aims to address and heal the physical and emotional symptoms of trauma. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE recognizes that traumatic experiences can get trapped in the body and nervous system, leading to a variety of symptoms such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and other physical and emotional conditions.

SE utilizes techniques such as mindful awareness, body awareness, and slow, gentle movement to help clients become more attuned to the physical sensations associated with their traumatic experiences. By bringing awareness to these sensations and encouraging clients to stay present with them in a safe and supportive environment, SE aims to help release the trauma from the body and nervous system, reducing or eliminating associated symptoms.

SE can be particularly helpful for individuals who have experienced complex trauma, such as childhood abuse or neglect, as well as those who have experienced more acute trauma, such as a car accident or natural disaster. It is often used in conjunction with other therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), to provide a more comprehensive and holistic approach to healing from trauma.
